Chairman Steve Poole and Membership Secretary Barry Quilliam hard at work filling a doorwayThe Airport’s powers that be have had a change of heart in that Society members are now allowed to enter the security zone without the need for a fence. This means that we can at last get into the museum building and work is  now well on the way towards conversion of the airport bungalow, as it was known, into a museum.

Hard work by several of our members in their spare time over the past few weeks has resulted in the building, part of which dates back to the days of HMS Urley in the Second World War, being totally stripped to a bare shell. The majority of the rewiring has been done as has most of the repair work to interior rendering, ceilings and plasterwork. The jungle surrounding the site has to a large extent been hacked back and the museum will eventually be surrounded by grassed areas. The next jobs to be done are installation of plumbing, a central heating system and a new kitchen. Decoration will then follow.
