A Spitfire for ManA full size replica Spitfire which featured in the Yorkshire Television Film series ‘Piece of Cake’ in 1988 was brought to the Isle of Man in 2000.

There was a major gathering of Spitfires for the screen during the making of the television series ‘Piece of Cake’. A total of five ‘real’ Spitfires were assembled for the six-part series. Added to this quintet were six full-size replicas, some of which had motorised propellers and one was able to taxi around the airfield locations. Constructed by Feggans Brown, some of the replicas met fiery deaths during the various attack sequences.

The taxi-able replica, however, has survived and has been purchased from War-Bird Promotions, with the view of bringing it to the Isle of Man. This replica Spitfire needs to undergo work, to restore it to the standard that it was in when it appeared in the film.

The aircraft will however be modified and repainted to replicate the presentation Spitfire ‘Manxman’. This aircraft was one of the first to carry Wing Commander Douglas Bader’s initials on the fuselage, and it was also a Presentation Spitfire from the Manx Public.
